It had been a long while since Adia had even heard Kaden's voice, let alone seen his face, and the time that had passed was beginning to pierce her heart as if a needle through an apple. Time healed all wounds, but the scars never seemed to fade.
"Kade, I'm pregnant.."
"You're what?!"
"Pregnant, Kade, I'm pregnant! You're pollen fertilized my flower, my egg provided a home for the fastest fish of yours that released itself into my body, your sperm got jiggy with my egg, I don't know how else to phrase it.."
"With..umm..is it mine?"
"No. It belongs to that prostitute in New York. We got down and dirty when you fell asleep."
"...how long?"
"A month..but, it doesn't matter.."
Her brown eyes gazed deeply into his, full of fear, drowning in emotion, and she couldn't read him. For the first time in the history of any type of relationship they had, she couldn't read him, and it scared the shit out of her.
"Why?"
"I'm getting an abortion. Tomorrow."
Shaking off the memory, Adia splashed her face with the pool of cold water that had formed in her cupped hands, patting it dry gently with a soft, green towel before staring back at the pathetic excuse of a reflection her mirror threw at her. She'd never given him a chance to respond. She'd completely stripped away any piece of respect she had for him in the moment she decided for both of them that she was going to kill their child. The worst part was he probably would have supported her through it, but she hadn't thought it through. It still haunted her, making her sick to her stomach while her heart skipped a few beats.
With her hair in a messy bun, and her pajamas comfortably wrapping themselves around her average shaped body, she took a deep breath, quickly looking away from the mirror. She refused to look at herself. She'd let so many good things in her life go because of selfish and sorry excuses she had provided for herself, and looking back, she regretted every decision, deeply and thoroughly.
She couldn't possibly have had the child. Her parents would want every part in his or her life, and she just couldn't have that. She had run away from that a long time ago, and the only thing keeping her connected to the hell most people would call a dream come true, was her brother. He was the one part of her past she couldn't let go. She didn't have the heart to. Even if she hadn't used her family as an excuse, however, she could have easily come up with a number of them to support her decision. She was an artist, and quite creative at that, but no matter how many people she could fool, she'd never been able to fool herself.
Adia grabbed her cell phone, there was no need for a bag, she'd showered earlier, already had clothes on her body, and knew Kade always had an extra toothbrush in his room, just in case. Adia had never been the kind of girl to pack two to four bags or one night. She'd always been adventurous, never really knowing where she'd end up tomorrow, and whether it be in Kade's room, or some place in New Mexico, she'd always kept a care free attitude, and an open mind toward it.
The air outside was crisp, and bitter, nipping at Adia's cheeks. She shivered a bit, pulling her coat tighter around her small body, a scarf wrapped snuggly around her neck. She didn't have a car, she tried to be as environmentally friendly as possible, and so after climbing into her bike, she started her ride over to the college, arriving at Davenport about half an hour after starting her journey.
Her cheeks and nose were red, and she could see her breath freeze before her eyes, but she still had to complete the last part of her mission, finding his room.
Adia remembered him saying he was staying in room forty two, and so after chaining her bike up, she started walking around aimlessly, looking at all of the room numbers.
"Thirty four, thirty two...twenty eight..."
In frustration, she looked around, noticing the numbers she was following only started at forty before decreasing. There were only a few people wandering around. A couple that was too busy sucking each others' faces off to be disturbed, a stoner who seemed too far gone to know where the hell he was, let alone help her with where she was, and the other bodies floating around seemed to disappear into buildings before she had the chance to ask for directions.
"Crap."
Taking a deep breath, she reached into her coat pocket, pulling out her cell phone. Unfortunately, luck did not seem to be on her side tonight, and with persistence in pressing the power button, and banging the small electronical device against a nearby bench a few times, it was determined that her one source of survival was dead.
"I'm going to freeze to death..on a college campus.."
Her eyes narrowed, and her unamused attitude developed into an upset state, but she continued to wander around, hoping, and praying, that even if she didn't find him, that there was a small chance he'd look out his window and spot her.
Another half an hour passed by, and her red nose and cheeks were now numb, her lips blue and quivering, and her fingers and toes in pain, slowly turning numb while a hopeless Adia sat on the cold grass, having given up, distracting herself with her surroundings, gawking at the photographs she could have been taking had she taken her camera.
