Allison ran her fingers hurriedly through her hair, thinking about how she hadn’t even thought to brush it this morning. Mostly likely then it would be wavy and tangled, a real mess. Oh well, since coming back to Kentgrove Alli had become a lot less picky about these things. In her job it was almost an expectation that you had to be well put together 24/7. You had to have a the trendy hair cut, the fashionable clothes, the latest accessories. It was nice to come somewhere without all that pressure and where she could just relax for awhile. Alli couldn’t tell you how good it had felt just to come out in a white t-shirt and her favourite jeans, not even having to really think or plan out the outfit at all. It was a pleasant change from days gone by. Pushing her sunglasses up on top of her head so as she wouldn’t lose them Alli glanced around the mall, or what she could see of it. It wasn’t bustling with people today but there was still a crowd enough to keep the store workers busy. It felt quite weird looking around at all the places she used to shop in high school, bringing old memories crashing down on her.
She and Hazel would sit at this very table, discussing Alli’s latest mistake over pasta and trying to find a way to fix it. You would have found her and Blake over at one of the many clothing stores, twirling and giggling and trying to find the perfect ensemble for when they stepped out that night. Alli and TJ would have been battling it out over at the video game store (though battling wasn’t really the right word since Alli always lost miserably) before sneaking into a change room for some good, clean fun (yeah right). There were plenty of memories here of her and Jack too but Alli was finding them harder to think about. They were both so naïve and carefree in high school, and now so much for her had changed. Alli’s days of hopping from one boy to another, of throwing her pom poms in the air and cheering, of passing out cold on the floor of her friend’s bedroom floors, were over. Well maybe not the passing out bit, Alli definitely wouldn’t say no to a good party. But in all other respects she’d grown up a lot since her high school days. She wondered if Jack had noticed on her visits back to Kentgrove over the years. He had stayed pretty much the same though Alli had noticed differences in him that others might not have. Probably because she knew him inside and out.
Leaning back and lacing her fingers together Alli glanced at her watch again. If he hadn’t gotten her message then she could probably be sitting here all day. She was contemplating just driving straight over to bang on his door when Jack’s lanky figure landed in the seat across from her. “pshht.. this is captain jack, do you copy? over,”. Alli tilted her head and gave him a hard stare, trying to appear like a mother scolding her child for acting silly in a public place. But she couldn’t help it as the corners of her mouth twitched up into a smile, ruining the effect. “sorry i'm late, al. i'd come up with an excuse, but you know me too well to buy into any excuse i come up with, so i say we just skip the embarrassment and move on to lunch before my stomach eats me,”. Alli rolled her eyes, tossing him a menu. She was used to Jack’s melodramatics but she wouldn’t dare let on how cute she found them. “my ass is here, though, just as you requested,”. He flashed a smile and Alli was again reminded of why he’d had almost every girl in high school swooning. “Well thank god for that at least, because you’re ass is the best thing about you,” Alli teased, knowing full well that he wouldn’t be fooled by that. The guy had just about everything going for him. But in her opinion his ass was pretty damn fine. “i was thinking about making you wait until dinner, but i had nothing better to do.” Alli raised an eyebrow, shaking her head slightly as Jack proceeded to get his charm on. He should have known she was already a lost cause long ago. “Don’t flatter yourself into thinking I would have waited for you Mr McKay, truth be told if you had turned up ten minutes later than you did you would have found me long gone,” she smiled sweetly at him as she finished, Alli had some sass and she could give as good as he gave. She had had a lot of practice over the years. “Stop it now,” Alli said as he tried to charm her with a comment about her hair, “I know you’re lying because my hair is a untidy mess. It’s pretty much how I rolled out of bed.”
Grinning with her tongue between her teeth Alli picked up her menu and held it in front of her face, just low enough to she could make eye contact with him over the top. She loved to banter with Jack, it was what they had done all the way through the trials and tribulations of high school. But they were also there for one another when things got serious. Alli knew she could count on him, that if she asked him he’d put all the joking aside he would and that he wouldn’t let her down. It was a comfort to know that she had someone to rely on, especially when almost every other aspect of her life was always unsteady. Her family life had never been rock solid, with her parents shaky marriage and eventual divorce. And then when she moved to New York for the first few years her job had never been a sure thing, there was always the chance that she could lose it in an instant. But through all these uncertainties she always had Jack and the others and that had made it all that little bit easier.
