KENDRA sat in her bed, knees pulled to her chest, sweatpants and sweatshirt indicating just how cold she was. she leaned over to the table next to her bed, grabbing her blackberry and scrolling through her text messages. she wanted someone to do for the day, even if oliver preferred her to stay inside and do nothing. as she looked at her phone, she realized that she hadn’t seen cale in a few days, and so she sent off a rapid text message, asking him if he was too busy to meet up with her for coffee and to catch up. she shoved the phone into her pocket once more, still too lazy to push herself out of bed to get dressed. she rubbed her eyes, trying to shake the sleep from her body, but not finding any relief. she groaned and dropped back onto her bed, face buried in the sheets. she could hear oliver moving around her dorm and she didn’t know what exactly he was doing, but she didn’t really care. she knew she was still in trouble, but he couldn’t stay angry for too long, and she figured at least she was going out somewhere he could still watch her. the campus café was well within the area he could watch her in, and she wasn’t going to let him tell her what to do. she was abiding by his rules, within her realm of reason. she rolled around on her bed for no reason, trying to find a reason to get out of bed, and finding herself coming up empty handed. it was too early to be giving a damn, and so she didn’t. she found herself tangled in her own sheets when she was done, making herself laugh at her stupidity. she was twenty one years old, but she had far too much fun acting like an idiot. maybe that was part of her charm - she had no idea.
SHE fished her phone from her pocket as she got a text back, smiling. she was glad to know cale could make time to see her. she sent him a text, telling him to meet her at the campus café in a half hour so she could have time to get changed. she rolled out of bed, wandering out to where she found oliver, commenting absentmindedly, “i’m going out to meet up with cale in a half hour. i know you don’t have anything to do, so i get to go out now, okay?” she grinned and kissed him before wandering back into her room before he could argue, walking into the bathroom to brush her hair and slap on a little makeup. she wasn’t into the whole process of going crazy with eyeliner or a mascara wand, but she liked to look decent when she left her dorm. being with oliver made her feel the need to look slightly feminine every once in a while. it was an absentminded paranoid fear that he might pick someone more feminine, over her, if she didn’t remind him of how she actually did have boobs and was a contributing member of the female society. she pulled her hair into a ponytail, knowing oliver would complain but not really minding. she wanted to have hair out of her face so she didn’t spend the majority of her conversation with cale, trying to keep it out of her eyes, which is what she did when her hair was down. as she walked back into her room, she pawed through her clothes, pulling jeans on, followed by layers of shirts, jacket shrugged over the top of it all to keep her from getting too cold. her shoes weren’t ideal for the temperature, since they were thin and more for wandering around during fall, but that didn’t matter to her. she liked the effect of the outfit and she was just going down to the café. it wasn't as if she needed to look like a model or anything.
SHE tucked money into her pocket as well as her cell phone, not bothering to grab a bag. she didn’t need to carry anything else, so there was no point. as she walked towards the door, she grabbed her keys from the bowl by it, not bothering to lock it as she left. ollie would be out soon and he could lock the door when he left. she shoved her hands into her pockets to keep them warm as she walked out into the morning air. the cold wind bit her cheeks gently, making her shiver slightly, but none the less, she kept walking. she trudged through the snow, knowing the way to the café without as much as a second thought. before she knew it, she pushed open the doors to the warm room, pulling her hands from her pocket once she knew they’d warm up. walking to the line in front of the cashier, she waited patiently to order her drink, handing over a crumpled five dollar bill, receiving a steaming cup of peppermint mocha and a blueberry muffin. she wandered over to one of the tables by the big windows, staring out at the snow. she had no idea where oliver was, but she knew he wasn’t gonna let her wander off on her own – he was around, but she didn’t care. she wanted to hang out with cale, to talk to him and ask his advice. he was younger than her by a few years, but she still considered him a great friend. she took a sip of her drink, followed by a large bite of her muffin, distracted by the snow outside. she didn’t even notice as someone came over to her table, only turning to look when someone said her name. she grinned as she saw her friend, standing up to wrap her arms around him, sitting down before she spoke, “nice to know you’re still smart enough not to stand me up.” she laughed, taking another long sip of her drink, washing down muffin. T O N I G H T ._________________________________________________ being as athletic and physical as he was, it was no surprise that cale’s favorite place to stop and think about everything was going on was the gym. of course there wasn’t really any stopping going on. cale was always on the move. you would think that with as much as he had going on in the past week or so, he’d take some time to rest. but the stress of the past few days was just driving him to work out more. when he was younger, cale and his brothers used to be big into martial arts competitions. each of them had won several awards at regional and national levels. but now that he’d made the move from florida to the north, he hadn’t had too much time to enter himself into competitions. so he’d had to find another way of burning up energy. that’s when he’d started hitting the gym non stop. it was the one place he could really think clearly, and there was definitely a lot he had to think about today. just under a week ago, raegan parker had completely up and left new haven without word to him or anyone else as far as he knew. he’d gotten a call from her after she’d already left, saying that she’d been lying about her age all along and that she was really seventeen and had left home. her parents had found out where she’d been living and took her away with them. it had been hard enough for the past month or so. he’d been crushing hardcore for the girl for some time now and she’d just been having the time of her life with the biggest asshole on the planet. cale had never been one to mope around about not having the girl he wanted, but the fact that she’d chosen carter over him was a killer. and now she was completely gone. he’d never gotten a chance to tell her how he felt. that is if he ever would have manned up and told her. he doubted he would have even if she were still there. after being slapped in the face with all of that, just two days ago he’d gotten a call at three in the morning from sydney. she was completely wasted at a house party and wanted him to come get her. of course he had no problem with it, seeing as she’d been his best friend since their first year of high school back in bradenton, but seeing her like that had completely worried him sick. and then on top of that, while she was still completely wasted at her house sydney had confessed to cale that she’d been falling for him. it was quite possibly the most awkward situation he’d been in in his entire life. was it crazy to think he could see himself with someone he’d been friends with for so long now?
his cell phone vibrating in his pocket snapped him away from the image of sydney. he halfway stood up off the bench he was straddling to make room in his pocket to grab his phone. it was kenny asking if he was busy with anything. nothing too important. want to meet up somewhere? he shot back to her. it had been a few days since he’d seen her and honestly, it would probably do him well to be around a girl that he wasn’t constantly in some awkward love situation with. cale slowly lowered the weights down on the shoulder press, and swung his legs around off the bench. grabbing his keys off the ground, cale took off for the parking lot. he probably smelled ridiculous right now and needed to at least get into a fresh change of clothes before he met up with her. just a few minutes down the road, cale was glad to receive a text from kendra setting the time at half an hour from now. it was only a ten minute drive or so back to the dorm so that gave him enough time to shower up and get changed once he got there. the entire drive home, cale blasted the local rock radio station and nodded along to it. he didn’t want to think about either of the two girls clouding his mind right now, and music usually did the trick. he knew it would probably come up in conversation with kenny, seeing as he was pretty bad at hiding anything from his friends. but for now he wanted his mind to be sydney and rae free.
pulling into the parking lot at berkeley college, cale zoomed around the turns and pulled into a spot that was luckily open just outside of the entrance. the teenager parked, pulled the keys out of the ignition and hopped out of the jeep in one swift motion. he jogged into the building, and went straight to his room on the second floor. “hello?”
he called out to see if his roommates were home. the room was completely silent. shrugging, cale ran off to his room to grab a new change of clothes, then hopped into his shower. after a quick rinse, he got out and got dressed, checking the clock on the wall. he had about ten minutes until kendra would be expecting him. he quickly tousled his dark hair in the towel to dry it off. rolling on some deodorant, cale took one last look in the mirror. he didn’t really care either way if he looked good or not, it was just more so to make sure he was at least presentable. grabbing his keys and phone off the kitchen counter, cale left his room locking it behind him. the café was only a short distance from the dorm so he decided to take a jog there rather than wasting gas on such a short trip. he scrolled through the songs on his favorites list on his iphone as he started out his jog, selecting “99 red balloons” by goldfinger to use as a soundtrack to his run. the four minute song had only just ended when cale pushed open the door to the café. he spotted kendra instantly, but headed to the counter first to grab a pumpkin spice latte before joining her. “hey kenny,” he said, flashing his trademark grin & setting his drink down on the table. he warmly accepted her hug before sitting down and laughing. “no, i know you’d kick my ass. how have you been?” he asked, picking up his cup and taking a long drink from it.[/BLOCKQUOTE] NOTES FINISHED.
